New Guinea Snappers are found throughout most of Papua New Guinea. They are slightly larger than the similar species, Pink Belly Side Necks. They can reach adult lengths of 11″ across. Their diet is the same as most aquatic turtles, however they have a preference to crustaceans, such as snails and crawfish.
They are also referred to as the Pink Belly Snapping Turtle since the hatchlings of this species have a bright pastel orange and sometimes pink belly. This sometimes fades with age.
